How many coats do you actually need?

You need three coats to cover most climates: one heavy winter coat, one lighter transitional coat (trench or wool-blend) for fall and spring, and one rain-specific shell. Fewer than three leaves you vulnerable to seasonal or weather gaps, while more becomes redundant unless your climate genuinely demands it.
